Application

Getting started: start a painting with masses of values, not contour lines; control your values with mixtures of raw umber and turpentine; mark you highlights; the extent of your drawing is the relationship of the highlights to the rest of the value shapes (light, medium, dark)

Mix your color value piles on the palette to set off the highlight.

THE HARDEST PART OF PAINTING IS MAKING A TWO DIMENSIONAL PLANE SEEN AS THREE DIMENSIONS

In general:  Staging and design are important in your painting.  Start with the effect (highlight) so you can set your other ranges (values) around it and not be stuck at the end unable to have something rights enough to have an effect in your painting.
