One of my great frustrations with painting sunsets up until this piece was my inability to paint the dark silhouettes of leafless trees on top of a freshly painted sky. It's simply one of the drawbacks of working quickly in oils. By making some adjustments to the technique, I found a way to make the paints dry enough in a couple of minutes to put these dark trees on top of the sky without the two colors mixing. It was a relief to finally be able to capture such a common sunset view as silhouettes of trees against the sky.
